sneaker.org moved!

After having run my own server for sneaker.org for now over 10 years, I have finally moved to a hosting service and decided to retire the old linux box that was hosting the site. It has served well, but its time has come. Dealing with the customer support of a hosting provider has certainly been frustrating, but not having to setup the server from scratch and not have to worry about keeping it patched will hopefully be a good tradeoff.

The site has been migrated, but all changes should in theory be transparent. If you find any problems, please report them to me. Thanks!

Gallery: The best web based photo album software

I’ve been using Gallery 1.x for a while. When I found Gallery 1.x I was thrilled as it was the first web based album software that really met the needs of what I was looking for. I installed it and liked it so much that I donated to help its future development. And I can say today that I am so happy to see what the developers of Gallery have done with it. Gallery 2.0 is truly amazing. Really well done. Smooth install. Good documentation. Great UI. And just overall smooth. It is the best example of a truly valuable opensource development effort.

Kudos and a big thanks to all the developers!

The communication tables are turning

The birth of the Internet and of computer networks in general was fueled by the existence of the telephone network. The acoutic couplers and the modems became the way the masses got connected to a common network. However, that transformation is now long gone. The Internet has become ubiquitous. The driving need for people to communicate is what caused the formation of the PSTN network. The existence of the PSTN network fueled the growth of the data network. But now, this are going the other way. The PSTN network is slowly giving way and the data network is becoming more pervasive. In the early days, data rode on the voice network. Now, with the emergence of Skype and services like Vonage it is voice that is riding on data. My own company has developed a conferencing switch which is oblivious to whether the end-points connecting to it are traditional phone, bundled phone (T1) or IP. VoIP is finally here and it is here to stay.

Eavesdropped!

“The mind is a very fragile thing, and I strongly believe
that no stimulus and no words can go by without affecting a
person — I don’t claim to know more or less about what is
true or not, but I do believe in being pragmatic and using
ones own judgment and critical thinking to set the
boundaries for our actions.”

Summer 2005 update…

I am taking most of the summer off from Stanford to attend to personal and business matters and to do some traveling. As a quick update, I finally fixed the CSS for the site so that it makes better use of the browser real-estate. Still plan on doing a couple more changes at some point in the future. Other than that most of the site is pretty stable. There are some new posts in the Thought section. Have a good summer!
